Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has called on newly elected Panchs to spearhead the transformation of villages into modern development hubs. Addressing the Panchs in Sangrur on November 19, the CM emphasized their critical role in enhancing rural prosperity and boosting the state’s economy. The oath-taking ceremony marked a new chapter for local governance, with Mann urging the elected representatives to prioritize inclusive development and focus on initiatives to make villages clean, green, and pollution-free.
Mann described gram panchayats as the foundation of India’s democratic framework. Highlighting the historical significance of the moment, he informed that similar oath-taking ceremonies were being held across Punjab for over 10,000 newly elected Sarpanchs and Panchs.
He called on Panchs to pass resolutions outlining development priorities, with the state government committed to providing the necessary resources. The CM assured that there is no shortage of funds for rural projects, emphasizing the government’s dedication to creating a progressive and equitable society.
The CM introduced the initiative of setting up state-of-the-art rural libraries equipped with modern facilities like Wi-Fi, solar power, and curated educational resources. He encouraged Panchayats to propose such libraries in their villages to foster knowledge-sharing and support the youth in pursuing academic and professional excellence. The libraries aim to empower the youth to become bureaucrats, scientists, and technocrats, driving the state’s socio-economic growth.
Mann highlighted the responsibility of Panchs to serve all villagers equally, irrespective of political or social affiliations. He cautioned against the dangers of groupism, which often disrupts development efforts. Transparent decision-making, he said, must be ensured by holding gram sabhas to engage the community in developmental planning.
The CM urged the Panchayats to actively engage in plantation drives, aiming to create clean and green villages. Highlighting the importance of environmental sustainability, he said that pollution-free villages would enhance the state’s ecological balance and overall health.
Mann emphasized the importance of transparency in the utilization of funds. He called on Panchs to make all decisions in public forums like gram sabhas to ensure accountability. Transparent governance, he stressed, would not only strengthen trust but also ensure efficient implementation of development projects.
The Chief Minister lauded villages that unanimously elected their Panchayats, showcasing a spirit of harmony and unity. Such villages, he noted, have laid the foundation for comprehensive development by setting aside parochial considerations.
Mann expressed his gratitude to the voters for participating enthusiastically in the elections, describing it as a testament to the state’s vibrant democratic ethos. He urged Panchayats to act diligently and ensure the overall welfare of their villages.
The event underscored the Punjab government’s commitment to empowering rural governance and fostering sustainable development. CM Mann’s call to action reflected his vision for a modernized and equitable rural Punjab, emphasizing environmental conservation, knowledge empowerment, and transparent governance as key pillars of transformation.
