In a bold statement following his inauguration as the 47th President of the United States, Donald Trump has reiterated his stance against any attempts by the BRICS bloc to diminish the dominance of the US dollar in global trade. Trump warned that if the BRICS nations pursue steps to replace or reduce reliance on the dollar, the United States will impose 100% tariffs on their trade with the country.
Speaking on Monday, President Trump stated, “If BRICS nations even contemplate reducing the use of the US dollar, they will face tariffs of at least 100% on all business dealings with the United States. We will not sit idly by as others try to undermine the world’s most powerful currency.”
BRICS, an alliance of 10 nations including Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, and the UAE, has recently explored strategies to create alternative trading mechanisms, which some perceive as a step toward reducing dependence on the dollar. Trump’s remarks come as a firm response to such discussions, underlining his administration’s commitment to preserving the dollar’s global hegemony.
In December, Trump had issued a similar warning, demanding assurances from BRICS countries to halt any plans for developing a new currency or supporting one to rival the US dollar. He declared that without such a commitment, these nations should expect severe economic repercussions.
“We demand a clear commitment that no BRICS currency will replace the mighty US dollar,” Trump emphasized in a previous statement. “Any deviation from this will result in 100% tariffs, and they can say goodbye to accessing the lucrative US market.”
This aggressive stance highlights the high stakes in global economic diplomacy, as the US seeks to defend its economic interests while the BRICS bloc explores potential pathways to enhance their financial autonomy.
