Unprecedented Budget Allocation and Infrastructure Development Plans Unveiled for Railways in Punjab
Indian Railways has unveiled a significant enhancement in its infrastructure and development projects for Punjab, reflecting a robust commitment to modernizing the rail network and bolstering regional connectivity.
The budget allocation for Punjab’s railways has seen a tremendous increase. The annual average budget outlay has surged from ₹225 crore during 2009-2014 to an impressive ₹5,147 crore for the 2024-25 fiscal year. This 23-fold rise underscores the government’s intensified efforts to upgrade railway infrastructure in the state.
In terms of infrastructure development, the average annual construction of new tracks has increased from 29 km between 2009-2014 to 35 km during the 2014-2024 period. Electrification efforts have also seen a dramatic improvement, with 163 km of tracks electrified per year, compared to just 33 km annually in the previous period. Punjab now boasts 100% electrification of its railway tracks, marking a significant milestone.
Currently, there are 12 ongoing projects aimed at constructing new tracks across a total of 1,158 km, with an investment of ₹19,843 crore. These projects are expected to greatly enhance the state’s rail network and connectivity.
Moreover, 30 stations across Punjab are set to be developed as ‘Amrit’ stations, including major stations such as Abohar, Amritsar, Anandpur Sahib, Beas, Bhatinda Jn, Dhandari Kalan, Dhuri, Fazilka, Firozpur Cantt, and Gurdaspur. These stations will undergo significant upgrades to improve passenger amenities and services, offering a more comfortable and efficient travel experience.
Since 2014, a total of 366 rail flyovers and under-bridges have been constructed, contributing to improved safety and reduced traffic congestion. These developments are crucial in ensuring the smooth and safe movement of trains and vehicles alike
