UT Administration Allows 24×7 Shop Operations for Business Growth and Ease
The UT Administration has announced that shops in the region can now operate 24×7 throughout the year. This initiative aims to promote ease of doing business, simplify labour laws, and benefit traders and shopkeepers. However, the operating hours for liquor vends, bars, and pubs will remain unchanged as they are regulated by Excise laws. The decision means traders and shopkeepers no longer need specific permission from the Labour Department to operate beyond existing permissible timings and days, leading to increased productivity and growth. All shops and commercial establishments registered with the Labour Department can now avail of this benefit. Secretary-cum-Labour Commissioner Vinay Pratap Singh has urged all shopkeepers and traders to register online under the Punjab Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1958. Employees are entitled to a rest period after five hours of continuous work and cannot work more than 9 hours a day or 48 hours a week. Shops open past 10 pm must ensure adequate safety and security for employees and visitors. Female employees will receive special provisions including separate lockers, security, restrooms, and safe transport if working after 8 pm with their written consent. Complaints can be forwarded to the Labour Department via email at alcld-chd@chd.nic.in or by calling 0172-2679000 for action. Additionally, establishments must install CCTV cameras with a 15-day recording backup and an emergency alarm system. Complaints can be forwarded to the Labour Department for action.
