UT Chandigarh Launches Pulse Polio Round for 2024, Targets 35,000 Children

The UT Chandigarh health department launched the Pulse Polio Round for 2024 today, aiming to vaccinate 35,000 children under the age of five. Secretary Health, Sh. Ajay Chagti, inaugurated the campaign by administering polio drops to children at the Model Immunization Centre, GMSH-16.

The inaugural event included Director Health Services Dr. Suman Singh, senior health department doctors, and representatives from WHO, JSI, and UNDP. The health department has prepared extensively for the campaign, training doctors, health workers, college students, schoolchildren, and volunteers. Additionally, they have ensured proper vaccine storage and distribution through vaccine carriers and cold chain equipment.

Over 460 Pulse Polio booths have been set up across UT Chandigarh, including Health Wellness Centers (HWCs), Urban Health Wellness Centers (UHWCs), hospitals like GMCH-32, GMSH-16, PGIMER, ESI, Ram Darbar, Police Hospital Sec-26, and others. Vaccination booths are also available at strategic locations like Rose Garden, ISBTs, railway stations, schools, markets, and 13 transit points.

Recognizing challenges in reaching certain communities, the health department has formed four special night vaccination teams named “Taare Zameen Par – A Night Vigil.” These teams target children of nomads, ragpickers, beggars, homeless individuals, and those residing in shelter homes or found near showrooms and traffic lights. Each team comprises a police officer, a vaccinator, a sanitation worker, and a driver.

This night-time vaccination drive is a unique initiative undertaken solely by the UT Chandigarh health department to ensure no child misses out on crucial polio immunization. As of today, approximately 35,000 children have been successfully vaccinated.
