World Leaders Pay Tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat – G20 Summit 2023
In a solemn ceremony on the 10th of September, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alongside his esteemed counterparts from the G20 nations and other prominent leaders of international organizations, gathered at Rajghat to pay heartfelt homage to the revered Mahatma Gandhi. This poignant event saw world leaders coming together to commemorate the legacy of the Father of the Indian Nation.
Among the dignitaries present were United Kingdom’s Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, President of the Union of Comoros and Chairperson of the African Union (AU), Azali Assoumani, Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Spain’s Vice-President Nadia Calvino, and the Minister of Economy of the United Mexican States, Raquel Buenrostro Sánchez. They joined hands to honor Mahatma Gandhi and laid wreaths at his memorial.
Prime Minister Modi extended a warm welcome to these global leaders, presenting each of them with a symbolic Khadi shawl. This thoughtful gesture was made even more poignant with a backdrop featuring a cutout of the Gandhi Ashram, paying homage to the place where Mahatma Gandhi’s ideas and principles were nurtured.
As a significant part of this commemoration, these world leaders also participated in a tree-planting ceremony at Rajghat. This symbolic act underscores the shared commitment to environmental sustainability and global cooperation, mirroring the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi.
Following these poignant ceremonies at Rajghat, the leaders will embark on their journey to the third session of the G20 summit, aptly titled ‘One Future,’ which will take place at Bharat Mandapam. This summit promises to be a platform for meaningful discussions and collaborative efforts towards shaping a better future for our interconnected world.
