In an ongoing crackdown against drug trafficking in Punjab, the eighth day of the anti-drug campaign ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh,’ initiated by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, has seen significant progress. On Saturday, Punjab Police carried out raids at 516 locations across the state, leading to the arrest of 130 drug smugglers and the registration of 85 First Information Reports (FIRs). This marks a crucial milestone in the campaign, bringing the total number of drug smugglers arrested to 1050 in just eight days.
As part of the operation, police teams recovered a significant amount of illicit substances. They seized 3.04 kilograms of heroin, 9.3 kilograms of opium, 6673 intoxicating tablets, pills, and injections, as well as ₹5.39 lakh in drug money. These seizures underscore the scale of the drug problem in the region and the urgent need for continued action to tackle this menace.
The raids were conducted in all 28 police districts of the state under the direct supervision of Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab, Gaurav Yadav. The operation followed instructions from Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, who has set an ambitious goal of making Punjab a drug-free state within the next three months. The state government has taken significant steps to ensure the success of this mission, including the formation of a five-member Cabinet Sub Committee led by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema to monitor the progress of the war against drugs.
According to Special DGP Law and Order, Arpit Shukla, the operation involved over 250 police teams, comprising more than 1700 police personnel. These teams were led by 107 senior officers of the rank of SP and DSP, who coordinated the raids and ensured the smooth execution of the day-long operation. The teams checked 602 suspicious individuals during the raids and conducted thorough investigations to dismantle drug trafficking networks operating in the state.
In addition to the arrests and seizures, the Punjab Police has developed a comprehensive strategy to combat the drug issue, which includes enforcement, de-addiction, and prevention efforts. As part of the ‘De-addiction’ initiative, the police successfully convinced four individuals to undergo de-addiction and rehabilitation treatments. Moreover, the police organized 151 awareness events across the state to educate the public about the dangers of drug abuse and the importance of a drug-free society.
On the prevention front, the police conducted checks at 672 pharmaceutical shops in six districts, including Bathinda, Mansa, Barnala, Patiala, Sangrur, and SAS Nagar. These checks aimed to ensure that these pharmacies were not selling intoxicating substances or habit-forming drugs outside of legal parameters. The inspections were a crucial part of the ongoing effort to regulate the sale of controlled substances and ensure compliance with pharmaceutical norms and regulations.
The Punjab Police remains steadfast in its commitment to eliminate the drug menace from the state and is determined to continue its aggressive operations until the scourge of drugs is eradicated. Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s government is fully focused on making Punjab a drug-free state, and with the support of the public, the authorities believe that this mission will soon be accomplished.
As the operation progresses, it is clear that the battle against drug trafficking is far from over, but with sustained efforts from the Punjab Police and the community at large, there is hope that Punjab can achieve a drug-free future.
