A fresh extortion threat targeting a prominent businessman in Ludhiana has once again brought Punjab’s law and order situation under scrutiny, raising serious concerns among the state’s industrial and trading community. The businessman allegedly received a demand for ₹2 crore, accompanied by threats of dire consequences if the amount was not paid within a stipulated time, prompting swift police action.
According to senior police officials, the extortion call was received earlier this week by an industrialist who owns a mid-sized manufacturing unit in Ludhiana, one of Punjab’s most important industrial hubs. The caller reportedly claimed links to an organised criminal network and warned the businessman against approaching the authorities. However, the victim immediately informed the police, leading to the registration of a case and the launch of a multi-agency investigation.
The Ludhiana Police Commissionerate confirmed that a First Information Report (FIR) has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act. Initial investigations suggest that the call may have been routed through internet-based calling platforms in an attempt to conceal the caller’s location.
