Mansa : The Punjab government has reached an agreement with the Justice Committee in the Parvinder Singh Jhota murder case, accepting key demands including ₹2 crore compensation and a government job for his wife, Manpreet Kaur, subject to eligibility. The agreement also provides for a memorial in Jhota’s name and naming the proposed trauma centre at Khiala Kalan after him. The post-mortem is scheduled for November 6, followed by his cremation. The government has also agreed to facilitate the release of arrested activists Lakha Sidhana and Mohanjit Sheron, while demands for withdrawing cases against protesters are part of the settlement. Additional relief includes ₹50 lakh and a government job for the wife of a farmer who died in a separate drug-related incident, ₹20 lakh for the family of a man electrocuted during a protest, and ₹5 lakh each for four people injured in firing, along with medical expenses. The government had earlier agreed to a CBI investigation into Jhota’s killing. He was shot dead in Mansa on October 13 while confronting a medical store operator over alleged illegal drug sales. His killing triggered protests across Punjab and intensified scrutiny of the state’s anti-drug campaign. The latest agreement offers a possible breakthrough, but its implementation and the outcome of the CBI investigation will be crucial to delivering justice to the family.
