Delhi’s New BJP Government Dismisses Co-Terminus Appointments, CM Rekha Gupta Implements Key Policy Changes

The newly-formed Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Delhi has taken a decisive step by terminating all co-terminus appointments associated with the offices of the former chief minister and cabinet ministers. This major administrative overhaul comes just a day after Rekha Gupta assumed office as Delhi’s first BJP chief minister, marking the beginning of a new political era in the national capital.

An official order issued by the government stated that all officers, officials, and staff who were appointed on a diverted capacity basis across different departments, corporations, boards, and hospitals under the previous administration have been relieved from their duties with immediate effect. The directive mandates that these officials must now report back to their respective parent departments without delay. However, employees from the Delhi, Andaman & Nicobar Islands Civil Services (DANICS), Delhi Subordinate Services (DSS), and the Stenographer cadre will continue working under the newly-appointed chief minister and her council of ministers until further notice.

The decision to remove politically-appointed staff is seen as a strategic move by the BJP-led government to ensure a fresh start, free from the influence of the previous administration. It also aligns with the party’s commitment to administrative transparency and the restructuring of governance mechanisms in Delhi.

Shortly after taking the oath of office, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta chaired her first cabinet meeting, where she made two major announcements that align with the BJP’s pre-election promises. She confirmed the immediate implementation of the Ayushman Bharat scheme in Delhi, with a ₹5 lakh top-up for beneficiaries, addressing one of the most debated healthcare concerns in the capital. Additionally, she assured that 14 pending reports from the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) would be tabled in the upcoming Assembly session, ensuring greater financial accountability.

On her second day in office, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, along with her council of ministers, is scheduled to meet with senior officials from the Public Works Department (PWD) and Delhi Jal Board (DJB). The meeting will focus on assessing the city’s road infrastructure and water supply issues, two crucial challenges that have long affected Delhi’s residents. She emphasized that addressing the issue of pothole-ridden roads would be a priority, signaling the government’s intent to improve urban infrastructure and ensure better public welfare services.

The BJP has also reaffirmed its commitment to rolling out the Centre’s flagship healthcare scheme in Delhi, which was previously not implemented by the AAP government. The decision to introduce Ayushman Bharat in the capital is expected to benefit thousands of residents, providing free health insurance coverage up to ₹5 lakh per family. The move is in line with the BJP’s pre-election criticism of the AAP administration, which had previously resisted adopting the scheme, citing concerns over state autonomy in healthcare policies.

With these swift policy decisions and administrative changes, the BJP-led government in Delhi is setting a proactive tone for governance. The emphasis on healthcare, accountability, and infrastructure marks the beginning of a new phase in the capital’s political landscape. Under CM Rekha Gupta’s leadership, the party aims to reshape Delhi’s governance, addressing long-standing issues while fulfilling its electoral commitments.
