Shimla: Healthcare services were disrupted in the state capital after doctors went on mass leave in protest against the termination of a colleague following an alleged assault incident at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla. The agitation comes after an inquiry led to the removal of Dr Raghav Nirula, accused of assaulting a patient.
The Resident Doctors Association (RDA) announced the decision to proceed on mass leave, stating that the termination was unjust and had demoralised the medical fraternity. The association warned that such actions could create an atmosphere of fear among doctors and adversely affect patient care.
According to officials, the incident involved an altercation between the doctor and a patient, which was later investigated by the hospital administration. Based on the inquiry report, authorities concluded that the doctor was guilty of misconduct, leading to his dismissal. The government maintained that violence against patients cannot be justified under any circumstances.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu defended the decision, asserting that the government stands firmly for patient safety and accountability in public healthcare institutions. He stated that no professional, regardless of position, can be allowed to misuse authority or resort to violence.
Despite assurances from the government that emergency and essential services would remain operational, the protest highlighted growing tensions between healthcare workers and the administration. The situation has reignited debate over workplace stress, safety of doctors, and the need for balanced mechanisms to address disputes within hospitals.
