The Supreme Court has directed the Himachal Pradesh high court to finally wrap up a high-profile dispute involving former director general of police (DGP) Sanjay Kundu. This comes after a series of allegations of extortion were made against him. The apex court has instructed the high court to evaluate two separate Special Investigation Team (SIT) reports – one from a 2023 order to probe extortion charges against Kundu.

The case involves businessman Nishant Sharma and Kundu, with the apex court stating, “We leave it open to the high court to take further action if required in the interest of justice.” Notably, the high court had directed the SIT to add sections on extortion and intimidation while investigating allegations made by parties involved in FIRs. The Supreme Court also mentioned that if Kundu faces credible threats in the future, the high court can intervene considering the situation prevailing at the time.

Kundu, who retired as police chief on April 30 last year, had approached the Supreme Court challenging a high court order directing him to appear before the SIT on September 24. A division bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and KV Viswanathan had submitted two separate reports before the chief judicial magistrate in Kangra, and another before the additional chief judicial magistrate in Shimla.

In a related development, the Supreme Court has ordered the discontinuation of security cover provided to Sharma.
