In a crucial development regarding the legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP), farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal reached Chandigarh by ambulance from Khanauri on Friday for discussions with a government panel. The meeting, initially scheduled for 5 PM, was advanced to 4 PM after farmer leaders objected to the timing. The discussions will involve key government officials, including Union Minister for Food and Public Distribution Pralhad Joshi and Union Agriculture Secretary Devesh Chaturvedi, in an attempt to address farmers’ long-standing demands.
The meeting was set to include Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, but he will not be attending due to his son’s wedding commitments. The talks are part of the ongoing negotiations between the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha with the central government over MSP assurances. After 81 days of protest fasting at the Khanauri border, Dallewal made his first exit from the protest site, accompanied by farmer leader Kaka Singh Kotda, a team of doctors, and other key representatives. Before his departure, doctors conducted a medical examination to ensure he was fit for the discussions. Following their clearance, Dallewal was transported via stretcher from his trolley to the waiting ambulance, which then began the three-hour journey to Chandigarh.
The government’s decision to reschedule the meeting reflects the urgency of the issue, as farmers continue to push for legal backing on MSP, a demand that has fueled multiple protests across the country. The talks are expected to shape the future course of action for both the government and farmer groups as they work toward a resolution.
