Shimla: Himachal Pradesh is bracing for another spell of intense monsoon activity, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of a heightened risk of flash floods and heavy rainfall across several parts of the state over the next 24 hours.

According to the Meteorological Centre in Shimla, a flash flood warning has been issued for seven districts—Shimla, Kullu, Kangra, Mandi, Chamba, Solan and Sirmaur—where persistent rainfall could trigger sudden flooding in low-lying areas, overflowing streams and seasonal rivulets, as well as landslides in vulnerable hill regions.

The weather office has also placed Kangra, Mandi, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Una, Chamba and Sirmaur under an Orange Alert for Monday, forecasting heavy rainfall at isolated locations. Residents in these districts have been advised to remain vigilant as intense rain may lead to waterlogging, disruption of road connectivity and a rise in the water levels of rivers and nullahs.

Meanwhile, a Yellow Alert has been issued for Shimla, Kullu and Solan districts, where light to moderate rainfall accompanied by isolated heavy spells is expected. Although the intensity of rain may be comparatively lower, authorities have cautioned that even moderate rainfall in the hill state can trigger localized landslides and falling rocks in geologically sensitive areas.

The fresh weather warning comes at a time when several parts of Himachal Pradesh continue to remain vulnerable due to the ongoing monsoon season. Saturated hill slopes, weakened road infrastructure and swollen water bodies have increased the possibility of flash floods and slope failures, particularly in mountainous terrain.

Disaster management authorities have urged residents, tourists and commuters to avoid unnecessary travel to landslide-prone areas, refrain from venturing near rivers and streams, and closely monitor official weather advisories. Local administrations have also been asked to remain on alert and ensure preparedness for any emergency arising from adverse weather conditions.

With monsoon activity expected to remain active, the state administration is keeping a close watch on the evolving weather situation and has appealed to the public to exercise caution, especially in districts identified as being at higher risk of heavy rainfall and flash floods.
