Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini Demands Swift Decision on Ravi-Beas Water Tribunal Report

Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has strongly advocated for Haryana’s rights over its share of water from the Ravi and Beas rivers, urging the Ravi-Beas Water Tribunal to make a final decision on its long-pending report. Addressing the tribunal, the Chief Minister emphasized that Haryana has been waiting for a resolution since January 30, 1987, when the tribunal had submitted its initial report. He insisted that an early verdict is necessary to ensure the rightful distribution of water, which is crucial for Haryana’s farmers, industries, and overall development.

During his visit to the Ravi-Beas Water Tribunal, CM Saini welcomed Justice Vineet Saran (Chairman), Justice P. Naveen Rao, and Suman Shyam (Members) on behalf of Haryana’s 2.8 crore citizens. He highlighted that every resident of Haryana, from children to the elderly, has been awaiting the final decision for decades, as the state continues to face water scarcity. Expressing confidence in the tribunal’s wisdom, he stated that a fair verdict would be widely appreciated across India.

The Chief Minister also spoke about water conservation, terming it a global concern. He recalled former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s initiative to interlink rivers and stressed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is now taking this vision forward. Haryana, too, has been making efforts in this direction, ensuring that future generations have access to adequate water resources.

Another key issue CM Saini raised was the SYL (Sutlej-Yamuna Link) canal, which remains a critical concern for Haryana. He pointed out that despite a favorable Supreme Court ruling mandating Haryana’s right to its share of water, Punjab has yet to comply with the verdict. The Chief Minister expressed his frustration over Punjab’s inaction, stating that Haryana has repeatedly urged the Punjab government to implement the decision, but no steps have been taken. However, he remained hopeful that the matter would soon be resolved in Haryana’s favor.

The meeting was attended by several high-ranking officials, including Rajesh Khullar (Chief Principal Secretary to Haryana CM), Anurag Agarwal (Additional Chief Secretary, Irrigation & Water Resources Department), and Advocates General from Haryana and Punjab. Their presence underscored the importance of this long-standing dispute and Haryana’s commitment to securing its due share of water resources.

As Haryana continues to push for its rightful water allocation, the decision of the Ravi-Beas Water Tribunal will be crucial in determining the state’s agricultural and economic future. The Chief Minister’s strong stance reflects the growing urgency of the issue, as water security remains a top priority for the state government.
