In a historic political development, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Rekha Gupta officially assumed office as the Chief Minister of Delhi at the Secretariat, marking a significant milestone in the state’s governance. At 50 years old, Gupta, who represents the Shalimar Bagh constituency, becomes the fourth BJP Chief Minister of Delhi and only the second woman from the party to hold this prestigious position. Notably, she is also the sole woman Chief Minister among the NDA-led states.
The BJP secured a resounding victory in the Delhi Assembly elections, returning to power in the capital after a hiatus of 26 years. The party clinched 48 out of the 70 assembly seats, decisively defeating the incumbent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). This landmark victory signals a dramatic political shift in Delhi, previously dominated by AAP’s governance.
Grand Oath-Taking Ceremony at Ramlila Maidan
Rekha Gupta was sworn in as the Chief Minister in a grand ceremony at the historic Ramlila Maidan, attended by prominent BJP leaders and key figures of the NDA government. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP National President JP Nadda, and various chief ministers from BJP-ruled states were present, signifying the importance of this political transition. Senior Union Cabinet ministers, including Rajnath Singh and Hardeep Singh Puri, were also among the distinguished guests.
A New Cabinet to Steer Delhi’s Future
Alongside Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, six BJP leaders were inducted into the new cabinet, forming the core team that will shape Delhi’s governance in the coming years. Among them is Parvesh Verma, widely recognized as the ‘giant-killer’ after his stunning victory over AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi constituency. Verma was considered a frontrunner for the Chief Minister’s role but has now taken a prominent position in Gupta’s cabinet.
Other newly sworn-in ministers include Kapil Sharma, Manjinder Sirsa, Ashish Sood, Pankaj Kumar Singh, and Ravinder Indraj Singh. The BJP has left room for three more ministers, indicating potential future expansions in the state’s executive team.
In another key appointment, former Leader of the Opposition Vijender Gupta has been named the new Speaker of the Delhi Assembly. Gupta’s return to the Assembly is particularly notable, as he had been physically evicted by marshals a decade ago during a heated dispute with AAP legislators.
CM Rekha Gupta’s Vision for Delhi
In her first public statement after assuming office, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed gratitude towards the Prime Minister and the BJP’s leadership for entrusting her with this responsibility. She reiterated her commitment to working with unwavering dedication for the welfare, empowerment, and overall progress of every Delhi citizen.
“We will take Delhi to new heights of development. Our focus will be on good governance, infrastructure, safety, and prosperity for all residents. I assure every citizen that my government will function with full honesty, integrity, and dedication to serve the people of this great capital,” she declared.
Gupta’s tenure is expected to focus on accelerating infrastructure projects, improving civic amenities, enhancing law and order, and implementing BJP’s vision for a ‘New Delhi’ with better governance. With a strong mandate from the people, her leadership marks a new era in the political landscape of the national capital.
