SGPC Executive Body Holds Back Harjinder Singh Dhami’s Resignation, Urges Him to Reconsider

Kumar Soni: Amritsar: The executive body of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), in a crucial meeting held on Friday, chose not to accept the resignation of its president, Harjinder Singh Dhami. Instead, the committee urged him to reconsider his decision and continue leading the organization. The development comes amid growing uncertainty within Sikh religious and administrative circles, as Dhami’s resignation had sparked widespread discussions regarding the future leadership of the SGPC.

Addressing a press conference after the meeting, SGPC senior vice-president Ragujit Singh Virk confirmed that the committee had decided to keep Dhami’s resignation pending rather than accepting it outright. According to Virk, the executive body believes that Dhami’s leadership remains crucial for the SGPC, and efforts will be made to convince him to withdraw his resignation. He further stated that a delegation of SGPC members would soon meet Dhami in person, appealing to him to reconsider his decision and continue serving as the head of the prominent Sikh religious body.

The meeting underscored the significant role Dhami has played in managing the affairs of the SGPC, particularly in addressing issues related to gurdwara administration, Sikh religious rights, and community welfare. His sudden resignation had led to speculation about internal rifts within the committee and raised concerns over who would step up to lead the organization if he stepped down permanently.

While the SGPC has not disclosed the specific reasons behind Dhami’s resignation, insiders suggest that political and administrative challenges might have influenced his decision. His leadership has witnessed several key developments in Sikh religious affairs, making his potential exit a matter of concern for both SGPC members and the larger Sikh community.

As the SGPC delegation prepares to meet Dhami, all eyes remain on his response. If he agrees to continue as president, it could bring much-needed stability to the SGPC’s functioning. However, if he insists on stepping down, the executive body will have to navigate the challenge of electing a new leader capable of handling the complex and sensitive responsibilities that come with the position.

The SGPC, as the largest representative body responsible for managing Sikh gurdwaras and religious affairs, plays a pivotal role in maintaining Sikh traditions, heritage, and religious administration. Any change in its leadership carries significant implications for the community. The ongoing developments will be closely watched, as the future direction of the SGPC hangs in the balance.
