Shanta Kumar Criticizes Congress’ Candidate Selection in Kangra-Chamba, Endorses BJP’s Dr. Bhardwaj

 Former Chief Minister and Union Minister Shanta Kumar today voiced strong criticism of the Congress party’s candidate selection for the Kangra-Chamba Lok Sabha seat. Addressing the media, he pointed out that despite conducting three surveys, Congress was unable to find a local leader ready to contest, leading to the nomination of Anand Sharma, who he believes lacks a connection with the grassroots politics of Himachal Pradesh.

Shanta Kumar recounted that Anand Sharma, primarily known for his long tenure in the Rajya Sabha, had contested only once in the Shimla Legislative Assembly elections 42 years ago, where he was defeated among a record field of 24 candidates. He expressed doubts about Sharma’s ability to resonate with local voters, starkly contrasting this with BJP’s candidate, Dr. Rajeev Bhardwaj. Described as a “learned and influential candidate,” Dr. Bhardwaj is praised for his deep familiarity with the region, underscored by multiple visits and engagements with local communities.

Asserting a repeat of history, Shanta Kumar predicted a significant defeat for Sharma, expecting him to retreat to Delhi post-elections. He expressed confidence that the BJP would secure a historic victory not just in Kangra-Chamba but across other Himachal seats as well.

Additional context for this electoral battle includes both candidates, BJP’s Dr. Rajeev Bhardwaj and Congress’ Anand Sharma, contesting a Lok Sabha poll for the first time. Polling in Himachal Pradesh is scheduled for June 1, with the counting to follow on June 4. In the last elections, BJP captured all four Lok Sabha seats in the state, although Congress managed a win in the Mandi by-elections subsequently.
