Solan। : Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has called for closer alignment between the state’s private universities and its economic priorities, urging higher education institutions to develop skill-oriented and industry-linked programmes suited to the geographical and economic conditions of the hill state.
Addressing a conference involving representatives and students of private universities in Solan, Sukhu said private universities could play an important role in the state government’s efforts to establish Himachal Pradesh as a comprehensive education hub. He stressed that higher education should not remain confined to conventional academic programmes but should increasingly prepare young people for sectors with direct relevance to the state’s economy.
The Chief Minister identified horticulture, food processing, agricultural technology, tourism and hospitality, renewable energy, forestry and healthcare as areas where private universities could develop specialised programmes. He said education and skills linked to these sectors could help create employment opportunities while also strengthening economic activity within the state.
Sukhu’s emphasis on location-specific education comes against the backdrop of a broader push by his government to reform the education sector. The state has been expanding the CBSE pattern in government schools, while the government has also been working to strengthen higher education through new subjects, vocational programmes and specialised courses. A 2026 Higher Education Department report, for instance, outlines plans for programmes including food processing and quality management, robotics, animation, drone technology and data science in specialised institutions.
The Chief Minister also used his interaction with students to underline the importance of self-reliance and effective management of Himachal Pradesh’s natural resources, particularly water.
He called upon students to develop an approach that combines education with practical solutions for the state’s resource challenges. Water management, he said, would have to remain an important part of Himachal’s development strategy, with young people encouraged to think about ways of using and managing the state’s resources more efficiently.
Sukhu also highlighted several areas that his government considers important for strengthening the rural economy. These included increasing milk production, promoting natural farming and using barren land for solar power generation.
The Chief Minister has repeatedly linked education with rural economic transformation. Earlier this month, he said the government was opening CBSE schools in rural areas so that children would have better educational opportunities without having to migrate to cities. He also linked education reforms with efforts to raise incomes in rural areas through agriculture, livestock and allied activities.
His government’s CBSE initiative has already expanded significantly. The state has brought around 150 government schools under the CBSE pattern, while the government has announced recruitment and deployment of teachers for these institutions. Sukhu has also said that additional teachers would be appointed to strengthen the schools.
At the private university conference, the Chief Minister also spoke about the government’s efforts to maintain greater integrity in the education system. He highlighted steps being taken to prevent incidents such as question-paper leaks, an issue that has generated considerable concern among students and families.
Sukhu’s interaction with students was therefore broader than a discussion on university education alone. He encouraged students to look at education as a means of addressing some of Himachal Pradesh’s most pressing economic and social challenges, including employment, rural income, natural-resource management and the need to build stronger local industries.
Earlier, the Chief Minister visited an exhibition featuring research projects and patents developed by private universities. The exhibition provided an opportunity to showcase research and innovation emerging from institutions operating in the state.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Col. Dhani Ram Shandil, speaking on the occasion, underlined the role of private universities in the state’s education system. He encouraged students to establish clear goals, work consistently towards them and keep the larger interests of the country in mind.
Vijay Pal Singh, Member of the Himachal Pradesh Private Educational Institutions Regulatory Commission, welcomed the Chief Minister and outlined the functioning of the regulatory commission as well as the objectives of the conference.
The Solan interaction is significant in the context of Sukhu’s broader attempt to reshape Himachal Pradesh’s education system around quality, employability and the state’s own economic requirements. While government schools are being brought under the CBSE pattern and new specialised courses are being planned in the public education system, the Chief Minister is also seeking greater participation from private universities in developing specialised skills.
For Himachal Pradesh, the larger challenge is to ensure that education translates into opportunities within the state itself. Sukhu’s message to private universities was clear: programmes in higher education should increasingly connect classroom learning with the sectors that can generate employment, entrepreneurship and economic value in the state.
The government’s stated objective of developing Himachal Pradesh as an education hub, therefore, is being presented not merely as an expansion of educational institutions but as an effort to connect education with the state’s geography, resources, employment needs and long-term economic development.
