Centre Elevates Two 1995-Batch IPS Officers as Special Directors in CBI

The Centre has approved the elevation of two senior 1995-batch IPS officers, Venugopal N of the Himachal Pradesh cadre and A.Y.V. Krishna of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, as Special Directors in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The appointments were cleared by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet on October 1 and notified by the Department of Personnel and Training. Both officers are currently serving as Additional Directors in the CBI and will take charge of their new responsibilities from the date they assume office.

The move strengthens the senior leadership structure of the country’s premier central investigative agency, with both officers already having experience at the senior-most operational levels within the CBI.

Under the government order, the existing posts of Additional Director held by the two officers will be temporarily upgraded from Level 15 to Level 16 in the pay matrix, corresponding to the post of Special Director. The upgradation has been sanctioned specifically for the individual officers and will not constitute a permanent restructuring of the posts.

Krishna, an officer of the 1995 batch of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, will remain in the position until May 31, 2030, when he is scheduled to retire, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Venugopal N, also a 1995-batch officer, belongs to the Himachal Pradesh cadre and is currently serving as an Additional Director in the CBI. His elevation similarly takes effect from the date he assumes charge.

The appointments come as the CBI continues to handle a wide range of high-profile investigations involving corruption, economic offences, organised crime and cases referred to the agency by courts and governments.

With both officers already part of the CBI’s senior command structure, their elevation to Special Director is expected to provide continuity in the agency’s leadership and investigative administration.
