The mortal remains of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh were consigned to flames on Saturday at Nigambodh Ghat in New Delhi. Amid the chanting of religious hymns, his eldest daughter, Upinder Singh, lit the funeral pyre in the presence of prominent national and international leaders.
President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in paying their respects. Other dignitaries, including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, and Rahul Gandhi, joined to bid farewell.
Foreign dignitaries, such as Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Mauritius Foreign Minister Dhananjay Ramful, also paid tribute to the globally respected leader.
The final journey began at 9 am from Dr. Singh’s residence at 3, Motilal Nehru Road, with his mortal remains draped in the Indian Tricolour. The casket, adorned with flowers, was taken to the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters, where senior Congress leaders and well-wishers gathered to pay their respects. Amid slogans like “Manmohan Singh amar rahe” and “Jab tak suraj chand rahega, tab tak tera naam rahega,” a large procession of Congress workers, supporters, and admirers followed the cortege to the crematorium.
The solemn ceremony reflected the deep respect and admiration for Dr. Singh’s contributions to India’s political and economic landscape. His tenure as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014 is remembered for landmark economic reforms, inclusive policies, and a commitment to India’s growth on the global stage.
Dr. Singh’s wife, Gursharan Kaur, and family members joined the nation in honoring his legacy. Leaders across party lines united to commemorate a statesman who served with dignity and vision, leaving an indelible mark on Indian history.
