Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal ignited a political controversy on Tuesday by accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of harboring a “love for Ravana” after his comments on the Ramayana’s golden deer sparked protests.
During a press conference, Kejriwal, the former Chief Minister of Delhi, described the BJP as having a “demonic nature,” claiming that their policies and intentions would harm slum dwellers and marginalized communities. Referring to the mythological tale, Kejriwal said, “Yesterday, I mentioned that Ravana came as a golden deer and Mother Sita desired it. Now, the BJP is protesting, saying it was not Ravana but the demon Marichi. The entire party is demonstrating outside my house, accusing me of insulting Ravana. This shows how much they admire Ravana. Their behavior is demonic.”
Kejriwal further alleged that the BJP’s actions would be detrimental to the poor if they were to come to power in Delhi, warning, “I urge people living in slums and impoverished areas to beware of them. These individuals will devour you like demons if given the chance.”
Responding sharply to Kejriwal’s statements, BJP leader Manoj Tiwari dismissed the AAP chief’s remarks, calling them an attempt to mislead the public. Tiwari accused Kejriwal of being a “Vidharmi,” a term implying deviation from religious principles.
“I am not surprised by his words. Arvind Kejriwal has a history of adopting a ‘Chunavi Hindu’ persona during elections, pretending to align with Hindu values for political gain. His statements reveal his disconnection from Hindu beliefs and Sanatan Dharma,” Tiwari said. He also criticized Kejriwal’s interpretation of the Ramayana, emphasizing, “The world knows that the golden deer was the demon Marichi in disguise, not Ravana. By distorting the story, Kejriwal has exposed his ignorance.”
The controversy has added fuel to the ongoing ideological clashes between the AAP and BJP, with both parties leveraging religious narratives to consolidate their voter base. Kejriwal’s remarks have drawn strong reactions from BJP leaders and supporters, further intensifying the political debate ahead of key elections.
