Major Drug Smuggling Racket Exposed Inside Sangrur Jail; Police Arrest 19, Including Senior Officials

Date:

In a breakthrough operation under the ‘War on Drugs’ initiative, the Sangrur Police have successfully uncovered a large-scale drug smuggling network operating within the Sangrur Central Jail. The police arrested 19 individuals, including high-ranking jail officials, staff, and drug smugglers, revealing the shocking scale of illegal activities taking place behind prison walls.

The operation, which took place on May 15, saw the arrest of Gurpreet Singh, the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) responsible for jail security, for his active involvement in facilitating the smuggling of drugs and mobile phones into the facility. According to Punjab’s Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav, the raid led to the confiscation of a significant amount of contraband, including 12 mobile phones, 4 smartwatches, 50 grams of opium, 12 grams of heroin, and other banned items. The seizure is seen as a critical blow to the jail’s illicit operations.

Further investigation revealed the role of Prashant, a grade four employee, who played a pivotal part in ensuring the smooth flow of drugs and mobile devices inside the jail. Alongside these arrests, a key link in the smuggling chain was uncovered with the capture of Manpreet Singh, a notorious drug trafficker from Amritsar. Manpreet was caught with 4 kilograms of heroin, a Glock pistol, two live cartridges, and cash worth Rs 5.5 lakh. Authorities confirmed that Manpreet was a close associate of Gurvinder Singh, an inmate at Sangrur Jail, further cementing the deep-rooted criminal network.

The police investigation revealed that DSP Gurpreet Singh was complicit in several transactions where drugs and mobile phones were smuggled into the jail. It was discovered that he had received substantial sums of money through various means, including cash transfers and payments to his wife’s UPI account. In one instance, he allegedly accepted Rs 40,000 in cash from the relative of a prisoner named Gurchet, in exchange for delivering 25 grams of heroin and two mobile phones to the jail. During a subsequent search, authorities recovered 12 grams of heroin from another inmate, Ravi, who was allegedly distributing drugs within the jail on Gurchet’s orders.

The police investigation is still ongoing, with authorities confident that more arrests will be made in the coming days. SSP Sangrur Sartaj Singh Chahal disclosed that further probes are underway to uncover additional links and connections in the drug smuggling network, particularly focusing on how these illicit goods were being procured and distributed both inside and outside the prison walls. Authorities have warned that individuals at any level, regardless of their position or rank, involved in such criminal activities will be severely dealt with.

The arrest of the DSP and several other individuals has sent shockwaves through the Punjab law enforcement community, highlighting the extent of corruption and criminal activities embedded within the prison system. The police have registered a case under Sections 18, 21, 29, and 27A of the NDPS Act, as well as Section 52-A of the Jail Act and Section 25 of the Arms Act. Additionally, Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act has been added to the case, as investigators continue to unravel the web of crime within the Sangrur jail.

With the arrest of key figures and the ongoing investigation, the authorities are hopeful that this operation will dismantle a significant portion of the drug trafficking network operating in Punjab’s prisons.
