Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has firmly dismissed allegations over his personal assets, asserting that his financial position has, in fact, weakened since assuming office. Responding to questions surrounding his declared wealth, the Chief Minister said every detail of his assets would once again be placed before the public in his election affidavit, leaving no room for speculation or misinformation.
The statement comes amid an increasingly sharp political confrontation between the ruling Congress and the opposition BJP, with personal integrity and transparency emerging as one of the latest points of political contest in the state.
Addressing the issue, Sukhu said that election affidavits are legal documents requiring complete and truthful disclosure of a candidate’s assets and liabilities. He maintained that there was no possibility of concealing or misrepresenting information because every declaration is subject to public scrutiny as well as legal examination.
“My assets have actually reduced since I became Chief Minister. The complete details will be reflected in my election affidavit, as required under the law. Every candidate is obligated to provide an accurate declaration of assets, and any incorrect information can invite legal consequences,” he said.
The Chief Minister also pointed out that his previous election affidavits have always been available in the public domain and have already undergone scrutiny. He rejected suggestions that he had acquired any undisclosed property during his tenure, stating that all his assets had been declared transparently and that there was nothing new to disclose beyond what had already been placed on record.
Sukhu said the debate over his personal wealth should be viewed through the lens of transparency rather than political allegations. He remarked that any individual could build financial resources through honest work and lawful means, adding that integrity in public life was reflected not merely in declarations but also in a willingness to subject those declarations to public examination.
Responding directly to the BJP’s criticism, the Chief Minister said that if the opposition had any doubts about his financial disclosures, it was free to seek verification through the country’s investigating agencies.
“If the BJP has any suspicion regarding my assets, it is welcome to obtain all relevant information through agencies such as the Enforcement Directorate (ED) or the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI),” Sukhu said, indicating that he had nothing to hide.
His remarks come at a time when political discourse in Himachal Pradesh has become increasingly centred on issues of accountability, governance and transparency. The Congress government has repeatedly accused the previous BJP administration of financial mismanagement, while the BJP has intensified its criticism of the state government’s policies and leadership.
By inviting scrutiny of his financial disclosures, Sukhu sought to project confidence in the transparency of his public record and counter attempts by the opposition to raise questions over his personal integrity. His assertion that his assets have declined since assuming office also appeared intended to reinforce the Congress government’s narrative that public service is not a means of personal enrichment.
With political exchanges becoming sharper ahead of future electoral contests, issues relating to financial disclosures, accountability and public trust are expected to remain central themes in Himachal Pradesh’s political landscape. Sukhu’s latest remarks signal that the Congress leadership is prepared to confront allegations directly while insisting that its record can withstand both public and institutional scrutiny.
