Kulbir Kalsi: The 38th edition of the SJOBA Rally 2025, organized by the St. John’s Old Boys Association (SJOBA), concluded with a breathtaking display of speed, skill, and precision, leaving motorsport enthusiasts exhilarated. The prestigious event, which took place from February 27 to March 2, saw the participation of 30 four-wheelers and 60 two-wheelers, with drivers and riders from all across India battling it out on challenging terrains that tested their mettle and mastery over their machines. The rally, known for its demanding tracks, once again proved to be a true test of endurance and expertise, offering spectators an unforgettable experience.
Suresh Rana and Ashwin Naik emerged as the undisputed champions in the 4WD category, adding another feather to their cap by clinching their eighth title in the history of the SJOBA Rally. Their flawless navigation and superior driving skills set them apart, earning them the top spot amidst fierce competition. In the 2WD category, Arun T showcased exceptional control and speed to secure first place, reinforcing his reputation as a skilled competitor in Indian motorsports. The final day of the rally was flagged off by Jai Krishan Singh Rouri, Deputy Speaker of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, from the Gaj Retreat in Garhshankar, Punjab, adding a touch of ceremonial grandeur to the event.
The competition was intense, especially in the 4WD category, where Harpreet Singh Bawa and Vikram Thakur secured the second position, closely followed by Khushwant Randhawa and V Sekar in third place. The 2WD category was equally thrilling, with Prathish claiming the first runner-up spot, while Karan Kumar M took the second runner-up position, demonstrating remarkable speed and precision. The rally’s route was a blend of challenges, spanning through the districts of Ropar, Garhshankar, Mansowal, and Hoshiarpur in Punjab, as well as parts of Himachal Pradesh. The course featured a mix of unmetalled surfaces, treacherous riverbeds, fast tarmacs, winding hairpins, and hilly terrains that tested the endurance and skills of every participant.
The event culminated in a grand prize distribution ceremony held at the CGA Golf Range, where winners were honored with trophies and a total prize pool of approximately Rs. 6 lakhs. Harpal S. Malvai, President of SJOBA, expressed his delight at the overwhelming participation and reiterated his vision of establishing Chandigarh and Punjab as prominent hubs for motorsports in India. According to Malvai, the growing interest and participation in the rally underscore the region’s potential to host larger motorsport events in the future. In an effort to amplify the excitement, a Super Special Stage was introduced at the flag-off point, featuring specially designed short tracks that allowed spectators to witness the power and capabilities of the competing vehicles up close. This addition not only elevated the thrill factor but also helped in bringing the sport closer to the fans.
The successful execution of the SJOBA Rally 2025 was made possible with the support of prominent sponsors, including Hero MotoCorp, Servo Indian Oil, Punjab Tourism, Vamcy Merla, Fortis, Coca Cola, Kandhari Beverages, Surbhi Packers, Isuzu, Paul Merchants, and the Doaba Group of Colleges. The seamless management of the event was ensured by the dedicated efforts of SJOBA officials, including the President Harpal S. Malvai, Clerk of the Course SPS Ghai, Danish Singh Mangat, Secretary SJOBA, and Dr. Anubhav Naresh, Vice President of SJOBA, along with the support of other members.
The rally’s success not only highlighted the enthusiasm for motorsports in the region but also emphasized the potential of Chandigarh and Punjab to become significant centers for motorsports in India.
