Severe Winter Tightens Grip on Himachal Pradesh, Fresh Snowfall and Rain Likely to Intensify Cold Wave

Himachal Pradesh is once again in the grip of an intense winter spell as widespread snowfall and rain across several districts have led to a sharp dip in temperatures, pushing the mercury below freezing in many high-altitude regions. The latest spell of snow has brought both relief and rising concern, as daily life in several parts of the hill state continues to be disrupted by harsh weather conditions.

According to weather updates, areas such as Shimla, Kullu–Manali and Lahaul–Spiti witnessed significant snowfall and rainfall, intensifying the ongoing cold wave. In Manali, nearly 2.5 feet of fresh snow accumulated on the Mall Road, transforming the popular tourist destination into a white landscape while simultaneously creating mobility challenges for residents and visitors alike. In Kullu, intermittent rain and snowfall continued throughout the morning, adding to the chill and affecting normal routines.

While the snowfall has been welcomed by farmers and orchardists, particularly apple growers who depend on adequate winter snow for a healthy crop cycle, it has also heightened concerns related to infrastructure, connectivity and public safety. Slippery roads, reduced visibility and freezing temperatures have made travel risky, especially in higher reaches and along mountain passes.

Meteorological agencies have indicated that the prevailing cold conditions are far from over. A fresh western disturbance is expected to become active around January 26, bringing another round of rainfall and snowfall to the state. This forecast has raised alarm among authorities and residents, as repeated weather systems in quick succession often lead to prolonged cold waves, avalanches in vulnerable zones and extended disruption of road, power and water supply networks.

In the state capital Shimla, the drop in temperature has been particularly noticeable, with icy winds and overcast skies dominating the weather. In Lahaul–Spiti, already known for extreme winter conditions, sub-zero temperatures have further isolated several villages, making access to essential services a growing concern. Local administrations remain on alert, keeping snow-clearing machinery and emergency teams on standby.

The harsh winter has also brought challenges for daily wage earners, small traders and tourism-related businesses. While snowfall boosts tourism in the long run, sudden and heavy accumulation often leads to temporary closures, stranded tourists and cancellations, affecting livelihoods dependent on seasonal travel. Authorities have repeatedly urged tourists to follow advisories and avoid unnecessary movement during adverse weather conditions.

Health experts have advised residents, especially the elderly and children, to take extra precautions during the cold wave. Prolonged exposure to low temperatures increases the risk of hypothermia, respiratory infections and other cold-related ailments. Hospitals in colder districts have been advised to remain prepared for an increase in weather-related health cases.

As Himachal Pradesh braces for another spell of severe winter weather, the coming days are expected to test both infrastructure and resilience. While snowfall continues to be an essential part of the state’s ecological and agricultural cycle, its increasing intensity and frequency underline the growing challenges posed by changing climate patterns. For now, the focus remains on safety, preparedness and minimizing hardship for people across the state as winter shows no signs of easing.
